Mobility

How to Help My Mother?

I have a 73 yr old mother with some mobility problems.  She calls herself disabled but can ambulate if the need be and she wants to. Has issues with thrombois in legs and hypertension,  she is on counadin and should be on bp med but refuses to take it. Depression and anxiety are also problems.  She is difficult to deal with as moods are ever changing. Financial needs to be put in order but she doesn’t seem to want to do these things...  any ideas?

Back Pain Advice

Hi Doctor Marion,

What type of help devices are available in my area to help a patient that has back pain due to pancreatic cancer.  My brother in law piles pillows on his back and I wondered if there is anything available to help with this.  Also what can be expected as the cancer worsens?  My family is praying for a miracle but if God does not grant us that miracle what else do we watch for to show the cancer is advancing.  Do the legs and stomach swell?  Because my brother in law has swelling on his stomach and his legs.

Getting Out

My best friend is now 82. He was a world traveler at one time, but now he’s not interested in anything. Can going out close to home or to see a local event be ok for this former globetrotter?

Speedy Grandma

My 92 year-old grandmother currently resides in a nursing home. We are fortunate enough to see her once a month or so, and she appears to be doing well. Sometimes in fact, she's doing so well that she moves very quickly and as a matter of fact, slipped not too long ago and fractured her collarbone. Is there anything we can do to continue encouraging her independence while safely restricting her speedy movement?

Time for a Cruise

My mother, who's in her 70s, is very excited about our upcoming Caribbean cruise. Her first vacation in 30-some years! I've created and shared an itinerary for her, so she can start planning. I'd like your help in making it a memorable, safe trip. She is mobile and still quite alert, just a little slow and sometimes forgetful. If you have any tips on packing medicines, avoiding thieves, navigating the airport, etc., I'd be grateful.

Eye Closure

Dear Doctor Marion, My mother is 84 yrs old and in pretty good shape for her age, but this last year, she has started keeping her eyes closed most of the time even while eating! I have asked her why and she tells me she dosen't know. We have taken her to her eye doctor, her psychiatrist and her regular Doctor to see if it could be a reaction to her medications, or some other cause, but none of these doctors has an answer.

Wheelchair Cushions

Hi. My mother is now legally blind and confined to a wheelchair all day as the result of a stroke two years ago. Please advise what type of wheelchair cushion is the best to reduce pressure sores on her bottom. I have seen egg carton foam and gel with foam. Also, are there any groups that visit nursing homes for prayer? Thanks.

Elder Hostel

My mother passed on two years ago. In the last year or so, my dad has caught the travel bug, but he has run out of travel partners. He’s on a limited budget, and that makes it a bit difficult. Where can he go to find older people to travel with?
