Help with Alzheimer's Disease

My husband is only 59 yrs old and has been diagnosed with alz. We have been married 38 yrs. I'm so scared I never thought something like this would happen, you think you will grow old together, not that he will eventually forget who I am! I can't find any help anywhere. We live in Muncie, IN. Can you please help me?

Helping Our Aunt

Our Aunt, who is almost 87 years old, has Alzheimer’s and though we don't live together, we take her to her doctor’s appts and get her meds filled, do her bills, cooking and baking for the week as she is no longer able to do any of that.  She wants to stay at home, though we're a town over from her. Is this feasible? She wants NO outside help either, other than my husband and myself.

Finding a Volunteer

My father passed away and my mother lives with me now.  What I would like to find is a volunteer who comes just to visit with the elderly.  She gets tired of talking to just me.  Who do I contact there was someone who called me before on this but cannot remember who or find her number. Do you have any ideas?

Helping My Grandmother Return Home

Dear Doctor Marion:

My 92 year old grandmother was recently currently hospitalized for a mini-stroke from which she is recovering very nicely, and I am trying to get her homecare services before she is released so she can return home. She currently has a home attendant 7 days a week, 8 hours a day, and needs additional home care attendant hours (two 12-hour shifts), as well as in-home physical therapy and someone to assist her with taking her daily meds.  I have spoken with the hospital social worker who informed me that it may take a few months before such services are in place, which I believe should not be the case, and which means my grandmother may be released without the services needed.  Putting her in a rehab will make her more disoriented than allowing her to return home. I have spoken to the attending neurologist who agrees she needs the additional assistance and have put my request in writing to the hospital social woker handling her case.  Can you inform me on how I can further advocate on her behalf, or rather, the next steps I should take to make sure she receives the necessary services in her home upon being released from the hospital?  Thank you in advance for your advice.

Hiring an Elder Care Attorney

Hi Dr Marion, Enjoyed your interview on PBS this afternoon (San Antonio, TX) Great information! I have a unique situation I was hoping you could help me with. My wife is from Japan (Nat American citizen)We have no children and no living relatives in the U.S. She does not drive, never had a job and depends on me for everything. She is 71 and If I were to die before her (likely) she would be lost. We are in our own home now but I have been looking at retirement communities where she would have transportation and community support. I am familiar with caregivers but who could I trust to help her with finances (bill paying, taxes etc) We have a few friends but I would prefer a professional personal assistant(?) who could visit her every 2 or 3 weeks to "oversee" the finances. The retirement home would take care of her other needs. Is there such a person or would an elder care attorney be the answer. I have a will and the executor is a close friend but I think I may change that to an elder care attorney also. Sorry for the lengthy email and any advise/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Getting Help

Dear Doctor Marion, My husband has Parkinson's Disease with dementia. He was a medical professional for over 50 years and feels he does not need help with showering, dressing, etc. He cannot be left alone for safety reasons. We do have a very good aide 3 times a week, for about 3 months, and he still does not like to have her come. I explained that I need the help. I also have found a second aide who can come for a couple of hours at a time in the evenings so that I can get to a caregiver's support group, and he is not happy about that either. Family members can only help out on rare occasions for a day or so at a time. I had hoped he would get used to this but not so far. What would you suggest?

Rehabilitation

My father suffered a terrible fall six months ago and has been home from the rehabilitation center for the last few weeks. It seems like he’s losing his will to stick with his exercise program. What can I do?

Tolerance and Finding an Aide

My mother is an Orthodox Jewish woman, and I have been unable to find an aide who can handle her rituals and cultural requirements. Providing care for her is just too much for me to handle, so I really need to hire an aide. Please help!
